Apex to the rescue

A group of Explorer Scouts taking part in the 2006 Apex Extreme have been praised for the way they helped a man with a broken leg on a Peak District mountain.

The teenagers had been taking part in the tough adventure competition on Kinder Scout near Edale, when they heard cries for help.

The eight team members youngsters aged between 14 and 18 went straight away to see
if they could be of assistance. Immediately they began first aid on the walker who had broken both of the bones in his lower right leg.

As there was no mobile phone reception in the area, the alarm was raised through the Apex Challenge’s radio network meaning the Edale Mountain Rescue Team were able to set off immediately.

The first members of the rescue team to arrive at the scene praised the young people who had done all the right things to treat the man who was obviously in some distress.

The two teams of Explorer Scouts were then able to continue with the competition while the Edale Mountain rescue team arranged for the casualty to be carried off the hill.

This year’s Apex Challenge was a weekend-long adventure competition for more than 150 young people aged between 14 and 25. They spent two days in the Peak District tackling tough challenges such as climbing, abseiling and canoeing while also battling for points against 40 other teams taking part.

Event Organiser Matt Richards said, “This mountain rescue incident just summed up the spirit of the event. Despite the young people racing against the clock to complete their challenges, they didn’t hesitate to stop and help this member of the public who clearly needed assistance.

“It’s great that we were able to do our bit to help, and showed the value of the training they’ve been given during their time in Scouting. These teenagers can be very proud of what they did.”

Full information and photographs from the event are now available online.
